KO? K.O.? K O? AKO?

Last Days Of Man On Earth a bunch of really great Louisville stuff lately that reminded me of this Bowling Green (?) record that I posted a while back. I never did find out anything about the band. Maybe something will come up this time:

Here’s another mystery record. All I know is what’s written on the label and there’s a lot of information there but not much useful stuff. There is not an address and only one last name (Hardaway) in a single songwriting credit.

I’m not even sure about the band’s name. It’s written as KO but is that KO or is it K.O.? The name on the label doesn’t have the periods. If it’s not K.O., what does KO mean? There is a Japanese character next to the name on the label so I thought it might be Japanese. I ran KO through Babelfish, it came back as KO. That wasn’t any help.

I looked on Collectorscum and didn’t find anything under either name. I did a Google search and found one mention of the record on a want list. No other information though, although they did have the record listed twice, once as KO and again as AKO. AKO?

The song titles are not very helpful either. Allmusic.com has 271 entries for songs called “Out Of Control” and none of them are by our mystery band. There aren’t any entries for this song and Homeland Security is gonna start listening to my phone calls if I put the name on the blog.

I think the band had heard the Weirdos, I hear a lot of that band in this song. It's KO's best moment.

The label does say that there are NO Ballads – NO Lovesongs which is true, there aren’t any. The songs were published by Magical Music, Hardaway was published by Milene Music, which makes me think he was not a member of the band.

The record didn't have a picture sleeve. The record came in a paper sleeve with ‘For Sale ONLY NO Promotional copies’ stamped on it. The record is on Wow Records Inc. and has a 1979 copyright. The band may have been from Bowling Green, Kentucky. That’s where I found the single in a used record shop near the university in 1986. There were at least a dozen other copies in the same box. I wish I had bought all of them. They were marked 75 cents each.

Update:

Here's a couple scans of the KO single:

Pink Section

A couple weeks ago I posted a link to the Inflatable Boy Clams. Two of the members of that group were also in a group called Pink Section that put out a single in 1979. It’s a fun record that's punky and arty. The guitar player is good on this song.

Pink Section was from San Francisco and apparently got their name from the entertainment section of the San Francisco Chronicle. This makes researching the band a little bit harder. There is supposed to be another single from 1978 but I’ve never seen it. The band also had several songs included CAN YOU HEAR ME?, a live LP recorded at the Deaf Club in San Francisco.

From 1980, here's a video of the band playing Yoko Ono's "Midsummer New York".

Ain't no hangman gonna put no noose on me

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that money in your hand?
Hey Joe, where you goin' with that money in your hand?
Chasin' my woman, she run off with another man.

Goin downtown, buy me a Forty Four.
Goin downtown, buy me a Forty Four.
When I get through that woman won't run no more.

Hey Joe, what are you gonna do?
Hey Joe, what are you gonna do?
Take my pistol, and kill her before I'm through

Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman dead.
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman dead.
Yes I did, got both of them lying in that bed

Hey Joe, where do you think you'll go?
Hey Joe, do you think you'll go?
Leaving here think I'll go to Mexico.

Yes I'm going, going where a man can be free.

Some man (other than me)

Somebody from here in Huntsville has been googling the Hi-Boys Combo lately and a post a did a while back is one of the few things that's availbale about the band. So I'm posting the songs again. Maybe it's somebody that knows something about the band:

I don't have a whole lot of information about this band. This is everything I do know and most of this it came from interviews with other Huntsville garage bands.

The Hi-Boys Combo were a trio (maybe) that had been playing since the early 60's and were probably Huntsville's first garage band. The band was Curtis Bolden on guitar and vocals, Bobby Glenn on bass, and Ray Sanderson on drums. Terry Barkley also drummed for the band.

This 45 in was released on Gold Master Records, probably in 1965 or early '66. Gold Master was owned by Sonny Limbaugh, a local dee-jay that could guarantee airplay and shows. Both songs were written by Curtis Bolden.

The Beatles-ish "Some Man (Other Than Me)" was probably the A-Side and played to get the kids dancing at the teen clubs. "Why (Must I Love You So)" is the song they played after the lights got turned down low.

This is the only copy that I've ever seen. I found it at a WLRH record sale in 1993. Somebody must have donated a collection of local records to the sale because the the box that I found this in also had records by two other local bands: The Shandells and The Rocks. None of then are available on any garage comps.

Not inflatable or big fat pets

Another mystery record. I found this in the used bin at Sunburst a long time ago. It’s a four song 12” in a white sleeve. There’s a round red sticker up in one corner that says ‘The Clams E.P.” and lists the songs. The label on the record adds the song writers name and publishing information. The record was self released by the band in 1992. The Clams were a pretty good poppy band and kept them short enough to not wear out their welcome. Most of ‘em anyway. There's a bit of new wave, the Clams were influenced by the English Beat. There's a little Joe Jackson in there too.

That’s pretty much all know about the record and the band. I googled the band name and there are a few non-seafood related hits returned. One of them was a Japanese collector site that lists the record and song titles. Nothing I didn’t already know. Also, there was a Minneapolis band named the Clams. Those Clams were all female though. Sounds like there was at least one guy in these Clams.

There were several other bands using Clam around the same time as these guys. Must've been an eighties thing.

In the street

Big Star didn’t record much in the 4 years they were together. Just about everything the band recorded got used for one of the 2 LPs the band released when they were a working band or the one LP made while the band was falling apart.

So I was surprised and glad to find this E.P. of Big Star rarities back in the late eighties. Here were 3 whole non-LP Big Star songs! Also included were the two Chris Bell songs released on Car Records in 1978. I never thought I’d ever get to here those. This was long before Rykodisc brought out the I AM THE COSMOS CD. One of the 3 Big Star songs is a cover of Loudon Wainwright’s “Motel Blues” that is now available on BIG STAR LIVE.

So here are the two songs that are left. First is an alternate take of “In The Street” and then a different mix of “Watch The Sunrise”. Yeah, the sound quality isn’t great. These are from a vinyl bootleg put out by the Big Star Fan Club, whoever that was. I think they are both taken from an acetate. A worn out acetate. I was just glad to hear them however I could though. Both of these are also available on a bootleg CD called WHAT'S GOIN’ AHN. I don’t know if they sound any better on there, that's hard to find too.

Happy birthday!
